A Scanner Darkly

The film version (using amazing RotoScope technology) of the Philip K. Dick novel A Scanner Darkly is coming to Harrisburg July 28th. I’m not sure who’s going to be running it yet, but it’s pretty cool that we’re getting our hands on what’s going to be a limited release (this movie is not going nationwide). Of course, Good Night And Good Luck wasn’t supposed to go nationwide either, but nonetheless, Warner Independent has chosen Harrisburg as one of the (last) release points. Nice. The trailer looks a little campy, but I’m curious to see how the book gets adapted to the screen. The entire movie is CGI, so since there are no physical or financial limitations on the sets and actors, it might actually be pretty good.

  1. The last roto’d movie I saw was Lord of the Rings in 78 and it was terrible. I swore off roto’d movies forever.

  2. How did I not reply to this? The rotoscope technique used in A Scanner Darkly is very different from the days of old. Nobody’s tracing anything anymore — it’s all digital these days. See Wikipedia’s entry on Rotoscoping for details, or watch the trailers for examples.
