Downtown Changes

LOTS of changes going on downtown. Have you seen them?
For starters, Red Door and Zia’s are closed. This is nothing new; it’s was in the Patriot a while back (and has gotten substantial coverage in the floor9 forums since). The signage they have is unique in a Lady and the Tramp kind of way. A guy and a girl are sharing a strand of CO2 tubing (though I believe it’s meant to be spaghetti) above signs that read “On January 23rd, they meet”. I’ll miss Red Door, but I’m going to remain optimistic that the New Red Door will be every bit as good as the old.
Downtown also got its first psychic. Long a staple of club towns everywhere, after-hours psychics are always good for draining those last few dollars out of the drunken patrons stumbling their ways home. This particular venue occupies the space left when Downtown After Dark vacated their facility (maybe to relocate to Wal-Mart?). I personally think psychics are a load of crap, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to stand in the door and listen as an eager crowd of already-drunk (at 9pm, no less) twenty-somethings got their palms read.
Their fortunes? All the same. It was the strangest thing, too:
“Enjoy Fisaga while you can”
I saw the Psychic tonight as we took a stroll after dinner. It was funny because as we were walking up to the corner at Fisaga, we heard some other people exclaim “Look –it’s a psychic!”. Weird.
What’s really changed, and is sad in a kind of way is the darkness that greets you on the other side of the Market St Bridge. The Catalanos and Angelina’s signs are dark. The end of an era I guess.

Not for long… Catalanos & Angelina’s was purchased by the “Dukes” crew…. can you imagine… a deck nearly 200 yards long!

What’s going into where the Keystone Restaurant is? Saw the sign in the window about the liquor license….also is Manga Qui closing?

Keystone Diner? On Boas and Third? They couldn’t have a liquor license before because of the school, but now since it’s gone they can. Beer and eggs, anyone?

Yea, I saw the application in the window last week. Is that place any good? The overflowing trash cans on Boas gross me out.

The only people I ever see eat there are people who look like they just got out of a halfway house…not that that’s an issue but may be a clue as to the quality of their food. And why they want a liquor license. Over the summer my husband and I were walking down Boas and two HUGE rats can running out from the trash cans and ducked back into the building drainage pipe. That drainage pipe is now blocked with a brick, like that will help…but Mercado’s is good, as long as you’re not too picky.
