Dance Auditions

Right at this very second, I’m seated at a nondescript folding table in the Linden room at the Days Inn State College. There are approximately 265 potential Frost Girls auditioning for just over a dozen available “Frost Dance Team” positions. Some of them have been here since 7:00 (it’s now 11:30). Others arrived closer to the scheduled start time (8:00). One of the key components of Frost will be our dance team, and as with every other component of the club, we want to make sure we have premium content.
Many clubs employ dancers these days. It’s far from a new or unique idea. State College’s own quasi-wishful-thinking-SuperClub, Love Over Easy, even has a handful. What makes Frost different is that our dancers will be running a choreographed routine for most of their “on-air” time, created by our own in-house choreographer. Not every song will have a custom routine — that’s a bit much. But they will be dancing through most hours of the night, and 90% of that time will be choreographed.

Each candidate is being considered on factors such as personality, fitness, ability, and style. The finalists (as well as the women who actually become Frost Girls) are going to be the ones with the best “aura”; those who are smiling, friendly, able to dance well, and yes, highly attractive. There’s no secret to success — everyone has their own idea of beauty, and just because a woman is attractive doesn’t mean she can dance. Likewise, just because a woman can dance doesn’t mean she looks approachable.

The auditions are spread out over four days. Tonight is our smallest night, with about 40 applicants. Curiously, it’s also our best night. The quality of applicants tonight is higher than the previous two nights. Either we’re on an upward trend, or Tuesdays are just great nights for dance auditions. The women tonight are excited, skilled, and adaptable.

The entire audition process lasts about 6-8 hours, beginning at 8pm. Why 6-8 hours? Partly because it just takes that long, but mostly because the dancers themselves will be working five-hour shifts so we need to see how they handle exhaustion. Each audition includes a brief freestyle routine, where the applicants are required to make up their own routine on the fly using their choice of our props. All of the women are fully-clothed, of course, since we’re not hiring exotic dancers, but in many cases, each applicant’s choice of attire accurately reflects their dance ability.

  3. My life is, in fact, impossibly difficult. To further complicate the matter, I now have the arduous task of reviewing each picture & video clip in excruciating detail. Over and over and over again. Yes, it’s difficult, but I will somehow carry on.

Frost is pretty well under wraps, so I can’t release the pictures now. Yet.
