Ill Departure / House Music Returns
By floor9 on Jan 13, 2006 in Downtown
This Saturday is Ill Cosby’s last (?) night at The District. If you haven’t yet come out to experience his sets, you are required by federal mandate to attend this Saturday night.
The District is switching “back” to house music Saturday nights beginning January 21st. “Back”, because that’s how Dragonfly got its start; The District has only ever had one house night (to my knowledge, anyway). Kev E Kev will become The District’s new Saturday resident. Though it’s been a while since I last heard him spin, he has a slightly darker, harder edge to his tracks than you might be used to.
I’ve never found a decent way to accurately describe Ill’s format to the masses. It’s a lot of mashups and odd tracks, but if you’re not already familiar with the style, that description doesn’t do much to convey the style. He’s been absolutely critical to generating the current vibe of The District; it’s currently a sort of anti-ultralounge. A crowd and sountrack completely opposite from the two stories above it have cemented The District as a subcultural fixture for downtown Harrisburg. If you’ve ever even *considered* going, this Saturday — January 14th — is *THE* night to go. If you haven’t seen one of Cosby’s sets, you owe it to yourself to attend. And hey, if it’s not your style, there’s a floor of Baltimore Club and a floor of hip-hop above you.
Not to say that Kev’s arrival is bad. Times change, after all. And I’m first in line to welcome house back downtown. Plus, Kev’s a great DJ, so any event he has his hand in is guaranteed to bang. I only wish they had a lightshow downstairs so I’d have an excuse to hang out down there.
Ill plans to continue doing sets locally, so keep an eye on his website for details.
