Rock Comes Down (town)
By floor9 on Oct 11, 2006 in Downtown
Thanks to forums member Cashmere for the tip - Smalls is opening this Saturday (9/14) with Pariah Lout and The Lookies.
Smalls is the aptly-named venue opening in the Spot Formerly Known As Good (also formerly known as Mars). Rather than try to find a DJ-centric niche that both hasn’t been locally catered to AND can sustain a paying crowd, Smalls is going full-throttle punk / garage / 70s mod (if it weren’t for cosby, I would have embarassed myself and just called it “rock”) with — hopefully — live acts on a regular basis.
It’s no secret that I’m not into the live music scene. However, Smalls is bringing about exactly the kind of nightlife variety that DT needs to sustain: the different kind. The “OMG Party Bar” is dead; niche is where it’s at.

Let’s hope the “OMG Party Bar” is dead. I still have the feeling he has a few more tricks up his sleeve.
Niche is great. There is more to life than cheap light beer and (like someone commented my “Changes” article) “girls on trampolines”.
