Under Attack + Photos

Yesterday (Monday 6/19) for about ten hours starting at 7:30am, the domain floor9.com was offline due to a denial-of-service attack on the domain. My hosting company did their best to mitigate the attack, but the site was down for about 9 of the 10 hours. I can’t imagine who was responsible (though I have my ideas), especially since people generally agree with my complaints, but the attack turned out to be laughably impotent if only for one simple reason:

They attacked the wrong site.

Remember that I have two domains pointing to this site: floor9.com and floor-9.com. I’ve had floor-9 forever now, and floor9 simply redirects to floor-9. By attacking (and temporarily shutting down) floor9, the attacker completely and utterly failed to achieve their goal. Moreover, anyone who can pronounce “internet” would HAVE to notice that when they visit floor9, they get redirected to floor-9. That leads me to believe that what I have here is an individual who isn’t particularly net-savvy, but has a grudge against my site and asked one of his (or her) “hacker” friends to do some damage. However, given the complete ineffectiveness of the attack, this “hacker” didn’t appear to be much more than your run-of-the-mill AOL script kiddie.

Interesting trivia: I was originally going to name my cats Script Kitty and Cat-5.

Moving right along, I just uploaded a ton of old photos into Flickr. Having just recently switched to a MacBook Pro, I’m in the process of importing all of my photos — all 18,272 of them — from the past four years into iPhoto. During the process I’ve come across some interesting sets that for one reason or another never found their way to Flickr. So now when you see pictures of the 2004 flood in my most recent photostream, you’ll understand why.

I’m leaving comments for this post open. Please do not post speculation on who may or may not have attacked my site.
