Lars and the Real Girl

Yesterday was quite the adventure for me. Among other things, my Element turned 100,000 (which, being a Honda, means it’s about a third of the way through its useful life), I discovered Jazzy Java over at the Hard Bean Cafe in Camp Hill (next to the DQ that just burned down), and I apparently became the last Central PA resident to visit the new Wegman’s in Mechanicsburg (seemingly a bit small for a Wegman’s). I also stopped by Cinema Center to catch Lars and the Real Girl, an independent film that appears to be in very limited, short-term release nationwide.

We’re currently swimming in a sea of good movies, as we seem to be every fall. Gone Baby Gone, Lions for Lambs, The Martian Child, Michael Clayton (if you can still find it), the list goes on. Lars and the Real Girl stands out by both concept and execution, playing out not unlike a cross between Amelie (only in English) and About Schmidt (only slightly less depressing). The lack of a score throughout most of the movie helps spawn a feeling of awkward isolation, the main premise behind the movie. The ending was a bit cliche, but simply because of its unique story, the film is worth a special trip. Just make it snappy, because I’m not sure that it will be running next week.

  1. Don’t feel bad, I’ve still not been to the Wegman’s

  2. It’s an interesting experience. Their produce, cheese, and meat selections are second to none. They also carry some products (such as dry-curd cottage cheese) that you can’t easily find elsewhere. But their prices are generally sky-high. Wegman’s generic 12-grain bread ($2.99) is more expensive than Giant’s organic 12-grain ($2.89), which is in turn more expensive than Giant’s generic 12-grain ($1.69). Same with the meats; the white-label Wegman’s smoked turkey lunchmeat was $1 less than Boar’s Head at Giant or Dietz & Watson at Karns. Also, some of the generic products that I picked up weren’t so hot.

It’s an interesting experience, but I’d rather see another Super Giant open up nearby.

  3. I’d rather see a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s before another Super Giant ;)

  4. Do we even have a Trader Joe’s around here?

And while we’re on the subject, does anybody even shop at Weis anymore? How are they still in business?

  5. The last time I went to an area Weis it was mostly senior citizens… and the store was sparsely staffed.
