Everyday Coffee: Life with the Behmor Brazen Plus

I’ve spent the last week putting the Behmor Brazen Plus through its paces as my daily driver coffeemaker. My first review focused on the basics of the machine, and today I’m going to focus on the end product: does it really stand out as an excellent coffeemaker?

In a word, yes*. It can produce an amazing cup of coffee, but there are a few caveats that may turn off some buyers.

Behmor Brazen Plus Review: A Coffee Geek’s Coffeemaker

Behold the Brazen Plus

The Behmor Brazen Plus is a fascinating coffeemaker from a company you’ve probably never heard of. It’s got an unconventional design reminiscent the Bunn HB, but with a feature set that simply doesn’t exist on any other consumer coffeemaker.

I discovered the Brazen Plus thanks to the SCAA’s list of certified coffeemakers. Up until then, I’d never heard of Behmor.

Based in Nevada, Behmor is a relatively small (at least compared to the likes of KitchenAid or Cuisinart) maker of extremely feature-loaded coffeemakers and home coffee roasters. This unit’s big brother — the Behmor Brewer — even has full control via app and Alexa. So when I found the unit for only $159 at Bed Bath & Beyond, I knew I had to pick it up. Bunn has a long history of building indestructible industrial-strength coffeemakers. You see them everywhere: restaurants, travel plazas, hospitals, convenience stores … anywhere coffee is a critical part of day-to-day operations, you’ll find a Bunn.

A few years ago, Bunn entered the home market. Back then I actually purchased one of their earlier models — the Bunn Velocity Brew. At the time, I wasn’t impressed. The coffee was good, but it lacked a lot of basic features that we take for granted such as auto-off and a drip stop. But that was a good six years ago, so it was time to see if the Bunn HB had improved anything.

Everyday Coffee: Life With the KitchenAid KCM0802

This is part of my Everyday Coffee series, in which I review four affordable SCAA-certified coffeemakers. For the last week, I’ve been using the KitchenAid KCM0802 as my daily go-to coffeemaker. Read on to find out how it held up!

The whole point of this review series is to find an easy way to make better coffee. Don’t get me wrong: I love my French press and pourover. But here in the real world, I don’t always have time to craft that perfect cup by hand — especially when I’m rushing around before work first thing in the morning.

Enter the KitchenAid KCM0802 automatic pourover. It’s an SCAA-certified coffeemaker, which means it makes a better cup of coffee than your average automatic drip. It heats the water to that magical 195-205 range, then brews in waves to simulate the pourover process. For the past week I’ve been putting this retro-future-looking-thing through its paces. Everyday Coffee: How I Test

This is part of my Everyday Coffee series, in which I review five affordable SCAA-certified coffeemakers. I’m in the middle of testing one of the coffeemakers this week, so here’s a look at how I actually do my tests. Read on to find out why subjective is the only way to go.

I Love Coffee

And there’s no better way to make coffee than by hand. A manual brewing method, such as a pourover or French press, will always give you the best results. And taste aside, the act of handcrafting my own coffee is just therapeutic.

Unfortunately, I don’t always have the time to babysit a manual brewing process. On workdays, I like — no, NEED — to capture every last minute of sleep in the mornings. Shaving off the 15-20 minutes it takes to make two pourovers is worth every second of sweet, sweet dreams.
